VIRTUAL VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION

To volunteer with NAMI Southern Nevada, please follow the steps below. To become a general volunteer NAMI membership  is not required but there are certain roles that might require it. Individuals must be at least 18 years old.

The volunteer intake process is below:

  1. Submit Volunteer Application
  2. Schedule one-on-one meeting with Volunteer Coordinator Assistant
  3. Meet with the Volunteer Coordinator Assistant (15-25 minutes)

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with us! All volunteer opportunities and positions follow a step-by-step process, which will be outlined below.

Requirements

  • Complete application and interview
  • Complete classes and training as needed for the specific program or support group
  • Depending on the program or support group, there is a number of sessions that leaders are required to complete
  • Willingness to share personal experience
  • Act in a responsible manner
  • Remain organized
  • Ability to use PowerPoint and other programs to present materials

Responsibilities

  • Work collaboratively with other program volunteers and program coordinator
  • Respect privacy/confidentiality of participants (break when danger of harm)
  • Comply with refresher requirements

Requirements

  • Must be an individual with a mental health diagnosis who identifies themselves in recovery
  • Attend a NAMI Support Group as a participant
  • Willingness to undergo 2-day NAMI Connection Support Group model training
  • Positive regard for, or personal experience with mutual support
  • Be or become a member of NAMI

Responsibilities

  • Willingness to identify potential new facilitators from their support groups
  • Maintaining fidelity of the NAMI Connection Support Group model 
  • Ability to provide group participant data as required with the support of NAMI Affiliate
  • Work collaboratively with other program volunteers and program coordinator
  • Respect privacy/confidentiality of participants (break when danger of harm)
  • Comply with refresher requirements

Requirements

  • Complete supplemental application and interview
  • Complete training as needed
  • Complete 3 presentations a year
  • Feel comfortable presenting in front of groups
  • Complete blended online and in-person training
  • Paid NAMI Membership

Responsibilities

  • Work cooperatively with a co-presenter
  • Gather materials from NAMI SNV office and return promptly
  • Reporting from and audience evaluations
  • Ensure accurate information on availability

Requirements

  • Paid NAMI Membership

  • Willing to connect with the diversity of the campus community
  • Attend at least one meeting monthly and participate in NAMI events

Responsibilities

  • Open dialogue with NAMI SNV and NAMI Nevada
  • Action planning, fundraising, promotions, networking
  • Meetings, collaborations, campus services, and resources relationships

Requirements

  • Be familiar with FaithNet resources
  • Hours vary, requires at least 3-month commitment

Responsibilities

  • Contacting faith communities
  • Community liaison with faith organizations
  • Giving presentations on NAMI resources to faith communities
  • Encourage interested individuals to sign up for our email list
  • Timely pickup and return of resources in the office

Requirements

  • Series of six 1-2 hour modules or a single day​
  • Grassroots advocacy training

Responsibilities

  • Transform passion and lived experience into grassroots advocacy​
  • Learn to tell a compelling and inspirational story in 90 seconds
  • Write emails, give speeches, and make calls​
  • Meet with elected officials​

Requirements

  • Passionate
  • Personal experience helpful, not required
  • Comfortable sharing their story and connecting it to a call to action
  • Paid NAMI Membership (encouraged)​

Responsibilities

  • Support local advocacy efforts
  • Attend events during legislative sessions
  • Up-to-date on latest advocacy news via NAMI e-newsletter

Requirements

  • Attend a Hearing Voices workshop as an observer
  • Complete a half-day training provided by NAMI SNV and an annual refresher

Responsibilities

  • Hearing Distressing Voices Simulation
  • Empathy-building experience of those who experience psychosis
  • Pass out consent forms, info sheets, activity sheets, evaluation sheets, and brochures

Requirements

  • General working knowledge of NAMI SNV
  • Cultural sensitivity
  • Lifting/transporting materials

Responsibilities

  • Connect our organization with other organizations/individuals
  • Outreach events and community/business drop-offs
  • Communications and media resource distribution
  • Initiate and maintain contacts
  • Identify community resources and connections

Requirements

  • General working knowledge of NAMI SNV and MH conditions
  • People skills and friendly

Responsibilities

  • Attend community events, fairs, festivals, and quarterly information meetings
  • Timely pickup and return of resources in the office
  • Staff booths and work cooperatively with NAMI and event participants
  • Encourage interested individuals to sign up for our email list

Requirements

  • Ability to follow directions and work independently if needed

Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance the day of an event
  • Help with set up, registration, and clean up
  • Share resources at NAMI informational table
  • Assist with event promotions and marketing

Requirements

  • Needed skills will vary by task.
  • Customer service, phone etiquette, and problem-solving
  • Knowledge of computers and faxing
  • Sitting or standing and moderate to heavy lifting​
  • Scheduled on an as-needed basis (preferred once bi-weekly)
  • Office Hours: Mon.-Fri. 9 AM-5 PM

Responsibilities

  • General support and special projects
  • Phone calls, preparing mailings
  • Organizing files, copying, assembling resource materials
  • Maintain confidentiality and appropriate use of equipment, information technology, and telephones
